The UK government has introduced a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system as part of its efforts to streamline and enhance border security. The ETA is an electronic pre-authorization that certain travellers will need before entering the UK. Here’s everything you need to know about the new ETA system and how it may affect your future travel plans.
Who?
You don't need an ETA if you are:
a British or Irish citizen
already have a UK visa
have permission to live, work, or study in the UK
The ETA requirement applies to travellers from countries that previously did not require a visa to enter the UK for short stays. This includes tourists, business visitors, and those transiting through the country. However, individuals from countries that already require a visa will not need an ETA, as they will continue using the standard visa application process.
How?
The fastest way to apply is using the UK ETA app (available on the App Store or Google Play) or online via gov.uk web page (bear in mind that you will need to complete your application in one go – you cannot save your progress, and if you do not do anything for 20 minutes, the service will time out, your answers will be deleted and you will need to start again).
You will need to:
Fill out an application form
Provide personal details, passport information, and travel plans
Answer security and background questions
Take or upload a photo of the passport you will use to travel to the UK
Scan your face with your device
Pay a nominal processing fee
Once approved, the ETA will be electronically linked to your passport and will be valid for multiple entries over a specified period.
When?
he new UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) requirement, which applies to most short-stay visitors, goes into effect on April 2, 2025. Applications open on March 5, 2025, for those from European countries, and have been open since November 27, 2024 for other nationalities.
How Much?
An ETA currently costs £10 and permits multiple journeys to the UK for stays of up to six months at a time over two years or until the holder’s passport expires – whichever is sooner. From 9 April 2025 an ETA will cost £16.
If you are planning to visit the UK from an eligible country, you should check the UK government’s official website to determine whether you need an ETA. Applying in advance will ensure a hassle-free journey and avoid any last-minute complications at the border.
By understanding the new requirements and preparing ahead of time, you can ensure a smooth and efficient travel experience to the UK.
